While it is a tournament where several youngsters prove themselves, it is also the stage where fans can see their favourite legends on the field, even after them having taken retirement from international cricket. This season, there is a 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi representing Rajasthan Royals and a 43-year-old MS Dhoni carrying forward his legacy in yellow for the Chennai Super Kings.

MS Dhoni
Former India and CSK captain, MS Dhoni, will represent the Chennai-based franchise yet again at the age of 43 years, making him the oldest player in IPL 2025. The wicketkeeper batter will want to play a bigger role for his team this season, after having played the finishers role to perfection in 2024. He could not run hard and bat longer due to a knee injury, but struck at a strike rate of 220 last season. Dhoni, who was the costliest buy in 2008, will get Rs 4 crore this season, as he is now classified as an uncapped player because he last represented India more than five years ago. He has played all 17 seasons of the tournament, winning five trophies for CSK as a captain. He has scored 5,243 runs in 264 IPL matches with 24 half centuries.

Faf du Plessis
The former South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis, is the only other player aged above 40 in IPL 2025. He will represent Delhi Capitals this season after having led Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the previous three seasons. The top-order batter has been named as the vice-captain of DC. With fitness and form on his side, du Plessis will play a pivotal role for the team at the top of the order. Popular in Sports
The experienced player was bought for Rs 2 crore in the mega auction. He has played 135 IPL matches and has scored 4,571 runs for CSK and RCB. He has also scored 37 half centuries in the cash-rich tournament.
Ravichandran Ashwin
At 38 years years, Ravichandran Ashwin becomes the third oldest player this season. Having retired from Test cricket as India's second most successful bowler ever, Ashwin is a legend of the game. He is back to play for CSK in what might be his swansong years. The off-spinner started his journey with the his home franchise in 2009. He was with the team until 2015, before spending two years with Rising Pune Super Giants. He then led Punjab Kings in 2018, before moving to DC and Rajasthan Royals. The Chennai-based bowler is among the top wicket takers in the league with 180 scalps in 211 matches. He was bought by CSK for a whooping Rs 9.75 crore for this season, proving that he will have a key role to play for CSK this season.
Rohit Sharma
Indian captain Rohit Sharma will enter the IPL on a high, having won the Champions Trophy in Dubai on March 9. The 37-year-old features among the oldest players this season. He has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in the past, but will be featuring as a player this season after being replaced by Hardik Pandya in 2024. Like Dhoni, Sharma also made his debut in 2008 when he represented Deccan Chargers. He also won a title with them in 2009. He is one among the very few players to have won six IPL trophies. The top order batter has played 257 IPL matches across 17 seasons and has smashed 6,628 runs. He boasts two centuries and 43 half centuries in the league and remains the only player to have scored a century and taken a hattrick with ball. The legendary batter was retained by MI for Rs 16.3 crore ahead of the mega auction.
Moeen Ali
The English all-rounder, at the age of 37, is the fifth oldest player in IPL 2025. He made his IPL debut in 2018 for RCB. He last represented CSK in 2024 and will now play for Kolkata Knight Riders as he was picked by the franchise for Rs 2 crore in the mega auction. Though he has retired from international cricket, he still plays in T20 leagues around the world. Ali, who can bat anywhere, and bowls off-spin, has played 67 IPL matches. He has scored 1,162 runs and has taken 35 wickets. While he might not feature in all matches for KKR this season, he is a handy backup option for Sunil Narine.
