Supermarkets across the UK selling a range of Irish blended cheeses have issued an urgent recall due to concerns over potential listeria contamination.

Customers who have bought any of the 18 affected varieties of Old Irish cheddar, including Horgans Irish Smoked Cheddar and Claddagh Bo Irish Cheese, with expiry dates of May 2025, are advised to return them to the retailer.


The products are sold at various supermarkets, including Tesco and Spar, The Independent reported.

What’s the issue?

JOD Food Products, the manufacturer of the cheeses, suspects that the recalled items may contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness.

The company has advised customers to return the affected products to the store for a full refund.

"No receipt is required. There is a risk that the product may contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that is potentially harmful if consumed," the company said in a statement, as quoted by Teesside Live.

FSA’s response

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published a complete list of the 18 recalled products, stating that the recall was issued due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The FSA has warned that symptoms of listeria infection resemble flu and may include a high temperature, muscle aches, chills, nausea, and diarrhoea.

In rare cases, the infection can become severe and lead to complications such as meningitis.

According to the FSA, the following groups are at higher risk of serious illness from listeria:

• · People over 65 years of age
• · Babies under one month old
• · Pregnant women
• · People with weakened immune systems

The agency confirmed that point-of-sale notices are being displayed in stores where these products were sold, informing customers of the recall and refund process.

Consumers are advised not to eat the affected products and to return them in their original packaging to the store for a full refund. Those needing further clarification can contact JOD Food Products directly.
