Scotland’s Minister for Drugs and Alcohol Policy Christina McKelvie passed away at the age of 57 after battling secondary breast cancer, her partner MSP Keith Brown confirmed at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

McKelvie was a longtime member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). Apart from being a politician, she was a passionate advocate for social justice, women rights, and Scottish Independence.


Her partner said that everyone is immensely proud of all Christina achieved, Sky News reported.

Brown said that she was passionate about many causes and was the first to sponsor the maiden Wear It Pink campaign at the Scottish Parliament in support of breast cancer—much before her own diagnosis. He added that today he lost “much-loved” Christina and that she will be missed “very much” by all.

Early life

Christina McKelvie was born on March 4, 1968 in Easterhouse in Glasgow. The minister came from a working-class family and was deeply influenced by her early experiences, The Herald reported.

Before running for office, McKelvie is said to have been an active Unison trade unionist working in the social services of Glasgow. Her intense support of equality and justice put her on the road toward public service.

Political journey and achievements

After being voted an MSP for the Central Scotland region, the SNP leader started her political career in 2007. She kept the Hamilton, Larkhall, and Stonehouse seat she won in 2011 until she died.

Starting at 39, McKelvie has worked in many capacities, including chair of the European and External Relations Committee and the Equalities and Human Rights Committee.

Christina advanced in advocating for initiatives supporting social justice, human rights, and equality. From 2018 to 2023 she worked on significant problems including protecting women from female genital mutilation and increasing awareness of menopause as the Minister for Equalities and Older People.

In 2023, she was named Minister for Culture, Europe, and International Development by Humza Yousaf.

Christina considered herself a strong supporter of Scottish sovereignty. Scotland's pioneering policy to tackle social isolation and loneliness as a public health problem was also presented by her.
