About 26 people were killed and 20 others injured in a terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday, according to PTI. This marks the deadliest attack in the region since the 2019 Pulwama incident. A senior official confirmed to the agency that the victims include two foreign nationals and two local residents, though more information is yet to be released.
The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be a front for the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the assault, according to PTI. Citing security officials, the news agency also reported that initial intelligence suggests the militants may have infiltrated from the Kishtwar region of Jammu and crossed the mountainous terrain to reach Baisaran via Kokernag in south Kashmir. The area’s remote location and rugged landscape are believed to have helped facilitate their movement and planning.
An eyewitness said that unidentified gunmen fired at the tourists from close range, causing injuries.
