Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg’s cause of death revealed

Michelle Trachtenberg’s untimely demise left the entertainment world shocked in February. Now, the cause of the Gossip Girl actor’s demise has been revealed.

According to a Page Six report, the actor died due to complications from diabetes mellitus, The news was confirmed by the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to the outlet. The authorities confirmed that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star died of natural causes.

Michelle Trachtenberg’s death

The 39-year-old actor was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at her New York apartment on February 26 by law enforcement officials responding to a 911 call. She was later pronounced dead. Early reports about her death stated that Michelle Trachtenberg had received a liver transplant sometime in the past year. Her friends claimed that the Ice Princess star had been suffering from poor health lately.

Michelle Trachtenberg’s family objected to an autopsy, leading the initial investigation to rule the cause of death as "undetermined."

Michelle Trachtenberg’s health issues

Amanda de Cadenet, a friend of the actor, paid tribute to Michelle Trachtenberg in February and said that the 39-year-old was always aware that “death was a high possibility”. “I will not share the details of our conversations over the last 6 months, but you knew that death was a high possibility and I am only sorry that the outcome was not a better one,” de Cadenet said as quoted by Page Six.


Gossip Girl and Buffy fans had also frequently raised concerns about Trachtenberg’s health. In January 2024, her appearance had sparked speculation about her well-being. The actress had slammed critics by dropping a selfie on Instagram with the caption, “Fun fact. This is my face," she wrote at the time. "Not malnutrition, no problems. Why do you have to hate? Get a calendar."


In another post, the actress responded to allegations that she had undergone plastic surgery. ““I’ve received several comments recently about my appearance. I have never had plastic surgery. I am happy and healthy. Check yourself haters,” Trachtenberg wrote.

The actress rose to fame with her roles in Harriet the Spy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Gossip Girl. Her roles as Dawn Summers and Georgina Sparks, in particular, made her a favourite of the audiences. After her demise, Trachtenberg’s co-stars such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Blake Lively and Ed Westwick paid tribute to her.
