Sushmita Sen's former sister-in-law Charu Asopa reacts to rumours of bankruptcy: 'My life has changed'

Charu Asopa, Sushmita Sen’s former sister-in-law, has been in the news for her public spat with ex-husband Rajeev Sen and for selling clothes online. The now viral video triggered speculations of a financial crisis. However, the actress has now clarified that she is not impoverished.

Just days after Charu Asopa moved to Bikaner, stating that the financial burden of living in Mumbai had become too overwhelming, her former husband publicly criticized her, accusing her of being dishonest about her circumstances and deliberately distancing him from their daughter, Ziana. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Rajeev alleged that Charu had recently embarked on a lavish cruise vacation with her brother and sister-in-law—an extravagant trip where, according to him, she covered all the expenses, including their travel costs.

In response, Charu posted a sarcastic remark on her Instagram Story, referencing an article on the topic and commenting, “Wow, that’s beautiful—whatever I do is seen as drama by this man.” She further clarified her decision to relocate in a vlog, calling it a well-thought-out plan to ensure a secure future and proper schooling for her daughter, Ziana.

Charu addressed the viral video of her showcasing a salwar kameez collection, which many interpreted as a desperate attempt to make ends meet. “The video is going viral not because of the clothes but due to captions like ‘Poor Charu is surviving by selling suits,’” she said, dismissing the notion that she’s living in poverty.

Having taken a step back from daily soap operas to focus on raising Ziana, Charu explained that she’s open to short-term work like advertisements and web series. “I am relocating because my priorities and focus in life have changed. There was a time when my work was everything for me, but now nothing is more important than my daughter. When I am not working in daily soaps, I don’t see why I should live such an expensive life in Mumbai.” She added.

Charu also explained her financial planning regarding property. “The money I am paying in Mumbai as rent can be EMI in a place like Bikaner, where I can soon own the house. I want a stable house for Ziana. I can’t always live on rent. I want to give her a stable school life. Here, in Bikaner, my daughter can live with their grandparents and not nannies when I am away for work,” she said.

This controversy erupted after the video of her selling clothes gained traction online. In an interview, she admitted that Mumbai’s high cost of living—Rs 1.5 lakh a month—pushed her to return to her hometown and live with her parents.

Rajeev, when asked, accused her of spreading misinformation and isolating him from their daughter. He claimed he’s tried to reconnect and offered a shared living space for Ziana’s well-being, but Charu hasn’t responded. Their disagreement follows a recent Dubai trip they took together as a family. Rajeev and Charu, who tied the knot in 2019 and welcomed Ziana in 2021, officially ended their marriage in 2023.
