BJP’s Rekha Gupta is the new CM of Delhi. Check her education and family background

Rekha Gupta has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) return to power in the city after nearly three decades. Her victory signals the end of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) dominance in the national capital.

Family background

Born in 1974 in Nandgarh village, Jind district, Haryana, Gupta moved to Delhi with her family at the age of two. Her father worked as an officer at the State Bank of India, and she completed her education in Delhi.

Education details

She is a graduate from Daulat Ram College, Delhi University. Her political career began in 1992 when she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during her time at Daulat Ram College. She gained prominence in student politics and later became the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 1996-97, advocating for student rights and welfare.

Her political career

Her journey in mainstream politics took off in 2007 when she was elected as a councillor from North Pitampura. During her tenure, she focused on enhancing local amenities such as libraries, parks, and swimming pools. She also introduced the "Sumedha Yojana," an initiative aimed at supporting female students from economically weaker backgrounds in their pursuit of higher education. Additionally, as Chair of the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee, she spearheaded initiatives focused on women’s empowerment.

Gupta has held key positions within the BJP, serving as General Secretary of the party’s Mahila Morcha in Delhi and later joining its national executive committee.

Rekha Gupta as the new CM

Gupta, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), secured her seat from Shalimar Bagh in the recent Delhi elections, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a margin of 29,595 votes. The election results saw the BJP securing a decisive victory, winning 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP managed to retain only 22.
