Replying to ESS Raman (Congress) in the State Assembly here, Ponmudi said the government was also thinking of bringing in a two-shift system for polytechnic institutes in the state as the student intake has been on the rise.
"As many as seven new Arts and Science colleges have been opened in the state since the DMK came to power in 2006, while the Anna University has been trifurcated," he said.
To a query by PMK MLA G K Mani on the 'plight' of students studying in unrecognised Teacher Training Institutes (TTIs) in the state, Ponmudi said a list of recognised institutes would be released soon.
"About 140 TTIs in Tamil Nadu function without state government recognition and we have sent circulars to all universities, asking for a list of TTIs affiliated to them, which will be released through newspapers soon," he said
Many institutes obtained recognition from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) but did not obtain the State Government recognition, thus leaving students in the lurch, especially during their exams, Ponmudi added.
