You might be consuming detergent powder, chemicals while eating ice cream in Karnataka

Synopsis
The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department (FDA) has flagged 97 out of 220 local ice cream, ice candy, and cool drink shops in Karnataka for selling substandard products under unhygienic conditions. Violations include the use of detergent powder to adulterate creams and phosphoric acid to enhance the fizz in cool drinks.
As per The New Indian Express report, a fine of Rs 38,000 has been imposed on the market player for following ill practices.
What was discovered in the raids?
In many instances, manufacturers resorted to using synthetic milk made from detergent, urea, or starch to reduce costs. Instead of natural sugar, they incorporated harmful additives such as saccharin and non-approved dyes to enhance taste and color.Additionally, investigations revealed that several manufacturers used contaminated or non-potable water in ice candies and cool drinks or added excessive amounts of flavoring agents beyond permissible limits.
Why are harmful effects of consuming detergent powder?
Consumption of such adulterated products can result in digestive issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The strong alkaline and acidic components in detergent may cause burns in the throat, esophagus, and stomach. If inhaled while consuming, detergent can trigger coughing, wheezing, and breathing difficulties. Experts warn that prolonged exposure or high doses can put excessive strain on the kidneys and liver, potentially leading to organ damage. What are the side effects of Phosphoric Acid?
It is a colorless, odorless, and acidic chemical widely used in food, industrial processes, and cleaning products. Commonly found in soft drinks (especially colas), fertilizers, detergents, and rust removers, excessive consumption may increase the risk of kidney stones and kidney disease, particularly in individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions. Additionally, it can contribute to osteoporosis and tooth decay.India's growing ice cream market:
The Indian ice cream market has grown four-fold in the last decade and is expected to reach Rs 45,000 crore in the next three years, according to data from the Indian Ice Cream Manufacturing Association (IICMA). Though seasonal in nature, it has witnessed huge growth helped by tailwinds such as rise in disposable incomes, changing consumer preferences, and expanding distribution channels."India has seen a fourfold increase in ice cream consumption over the past ten years. In fact, this sector is projected to reach Rs 45,000 crore in the next 3 years and more than Rs 90,000 crore in the next 8 years," said the IICMA statement.
Besides, the government is offering incentives on investments in the food processing sector.
"This strategic approach positions India as an attractive destination for both domestic and international investors looking to capitalise on the growing ice cream market. Rising disposable incomes, urbanisation, and evolving consumer preferences are fuelling demand, especially in tier-1 and tier-2 cities," it said.
