'Such an old-fashioned term but beautiful': Trump was mesmerized by THIS word in 'Liberation Day' speech

US President Donald Trump has announced a universal "baseline" 10% tariff on all imports into the US, on what he has dubbed "Liberation Day". Trump also unveiled a 10% tariff on UK goods and 20% on EU goods in a watershed moment for global trade. The US will also hit certain countries with much steeper tariffs, as high as 50%.

Trump announced a universal 10% tariff on all imports into the US from 5 April. Around 60 countries will also be hit with steeper tariffs from 9 April. The tariffs will make the life harder for working Americans, even Trump has acknowledged. The economy isn’t looking very favorable to those Americans at the present moment, one of the main reasons why Trump recently decided to dust off one of his more bizarre campaign fixations: “groceries.”

Trump says groceries word "old fashioned"

The President seemed more intrigued by the very concept of disparate food products sold in a retail store, than taking any sort of concerted action to lower how much they cost. “It’s like an old-fashioned word, but it’s a beautiful word, a very descriptive word. The groceries are coming down.” “I inherited a groceries situation,” he said a day earlier at the White House.

He then linked it to rising consumer prices, a topic he claimed was central to his political messaging.

“It’s such an old-fashioned term but a beautiful term: groceries. It sort of says a bag with different things in it. Groceries went through the roof and I campaigned on that. I talked about the word ‘groceries’ for a lot, and energy costs now are down. Groceries are down," Trump said.

“The groceries went way up. An old-fashioned word, it’s a very descriptive word. Groceries have gone through the roof.” He brought them up again in an interview with Newsmax later in the day.

“I have used the word groceries,” he said. “It’s like an old-fashioned word, but really it’s not, and people understand it.” It’s not weird for a president to talk about bringing the price of groceries down, but Trump seems incapable of raising the issue without briefly digressing to marvel at the word itself.

“The word grocery,” he said while campaigning last October. “You know, it’s sort of a simple word, but it sort of means like everything you eat. The stomach is speaking. It always does.”

Trump's remark on groceries has sparked diverse reactions on social media. Many questioned his perspective, suggesting it might reflect his detachment from common shopping experiences.

Critics humorously speculated on modern alternatives to 'groceries,' while others defended its ongoing relevance. The conversation also touched on the rising costs of groceries, highlighting economic concerns.

Economic experts believe that Trump's tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China will led to rise in grocery prices as a large share of our most commonly purchased fruits and vegetables are imported from these three countries.
