Did Biden’s furious call with Zelensky set the stage for Trump’s massive Oval Office showdown? All details

The signing of a key minerals agreement with Ukraine and a scheduled news conference Friday by President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were abruptly cancelled. Zelenskyy's visit cut short after an Oval Office meeting that included Vice President JD Vance descended into insults and chaos.

Trump's tense exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office will no doubt have ripple effects throughout the world. While Trump berated Zelenskyy in front of a worldwide television audience, he is not the first president to get into a verbal spat with Zelenskyy as his predecessor had a similar exchange with the Ukrainian leader. But that heated argument happened under far different circumstances and in a much more private setting.

When Biden and Zelenskyy had a showdown

In 2022, the then US President Joe Biden lost his cool on a phone call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy soon after Russia's invasion. According to a report in NBC News, Biden had called the besieged leader to tell him that he had just greenlit another $1 billion in aid to Ukraine. Before Biden could reportedly even finish his sentence Zelensky began firing off a list of additional help he needed and wasn't getting at the time. Biden reportedly quickly lost his temper, sources familiar with the call told NBC News.

"The American people are being quite generous, and his administration and the US military were working hard to help Ukraine," he said, raising his voice, and Zelenskyy could "show a little more gratitude." Biden administration officials told the outlet that Biden and Zelensky's relationship only improved since that June 2022 phone and never rose beyond Biden losing his temper.

Trump called Zelenskyy 'dictator'

While Biden may have had one tense exchange, Trump has consistently shown contempt for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since beginning his second term. Trump had referred to Zelensky as a "dictator" while appearing to praise Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Friday, Zelensky visited Washington to discuss ending the war with Russia and to negotiate a deal granting the US access to Ukraine's mineral resources. However, the agreement offered no security guarantees, continued military support, or a path to NATO membership for Ukraine.

The meeting quickly turned hostile. Zelensky left the White House shortly after Trump shouted at him, expressing open disdain. Outside the Cabinet Room, uneaten salad plates and other lunch items were being packed up, signaling the abrupt cancellation of the planned luncheon between the two delegations. According to the White House, the Ukrainian delegation was asked to leave.

“You’re gambling with World War III, and what you’re doing is very disrespectful to this country—a country that has backed you more than many think it should have,” Trump told Zelensky. Zelensky's primary goal had been to urge Trump not to abandon Ukraine and to warn against aligning too closely with Putin.

Instead, Trump raised his voice and appeared to play up the confrontation for the cameras. When Zelensky noted that Putin had violated ceasefires and other agreements 25 times, Trump responded that Putin had never broken agreements with him and avoided committing to any security assurances for Ukraine. He suggested the minerals deal—now on hold—could end the conflict.

Tensions escalated when JD Vance criticized Zelensky, saying, “Mr. President, with respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office and litigate this in front of the American media.” When Zelensky objected, Trump interrupted, raising his voice and warning, “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people.”

Following the chaotic meeting, Ukrainian officials reportedly contacted the White House to resume talks, but officials said Trump was not interested in further discussions. Trump departed for a scheduled trip to Florida, and both the planned joint press conference and luncheon were canceled.
