On Tuesday, two new cases emerged in Nagpur, following earlier reports of infections in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Salem. HMPV primarily affects children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

HMPV, first identified in 2001, is a respiratory RNA virus commonly active during colder months. DThe virus primarily affects the respiratory system, especially among young children and elderly individuals with lower immunity levels.
HMPV symptoms in healthy adults resemble those of a common cold, such as a sore throat, cough, and nasal congestion. However, vulnerable groups might develop severe complications, including pneumonia and respiratory distress. Infants and older adults are particularly at risk of symptoms like rapid breathing, cyanosis, and wheezing.

HMPV testing requires advanced diagnostic tools, such as the BioFire panel, which can identify multiple pathogens, including HMPV. As per reports, the cost for an HMPV RT-PCR test ranges from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 at leading labs like Dr Lal PathLabs, Tata 1mg Labs, and Max Healthcare Labs.
