Boost for Indian Army: MoD signs ?2,500 crore contracts for Advanced Anti-Tank Systems & military vehicles

The Ministry of Defence has formalised contracts valued at Rs 2,500 crore to boost India’s military capability. The agreements were signed in New Delhi on 27 March 2025, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Under these contracts, Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited (AVNL) will supply the NAMIS (Tr) anti-tank weapon system, while Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd will provide 5,000 Light Vehicles for the Armed Forces. These procurements fall under the ‘Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured)’ category, reinforcing the government’s push for self-reliance in defence production.

Advanced Anti-Tank Weapon System for Mechanised Infantry

A major portion of the deal is dedicated to the NAMIS (Tr) weapon system, developed by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDO). The contract for this system alone is worth Rs 1,801.34 crore.

This state-of-the-art system is designed to strengthen India’s anti-tank warfare capabilities. Equipped with a fire-and-forget missile system and an advanced sighting mechanism, NAMIS (Tr) will significantly enhance the firepower and accuracy of the Indian Army’s Mechanised Infantry. The system is expected to transform mechanised warfare, providing Indian forces with a strategic edge in combat situations.

5,000 Light Vehicles for Military Operations

In addition to the missile system, the MoD has signed agreements with Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd for the supply of 5,000 Light Vehicles. These vehicles, designed with enhanced engine power, can carry up to 800 kg and are built to operate in various terrains and challenging conditions.

The addition of these vehicles is expected to improve mobility and logistical efficiency within the Armed Forces. Designed with modern technology, they will ensure better operational flexibility across different battle scenarios and transport needs.

Strengthening India’s Defence Manufacturing

Both procurements align with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign military suppliers and promoting local production. These projects will boost India’s defence manufacturing sector, particularly benefitting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in component production.

The contracts are also expected to generate significant direct and indirect employment, further strengthening India’s industrial ecosystem. With this step, the country moves closer to building a robust and self-sufficient defence infrastructure while enhancing its strategic capabilities on the battlefield.
