The first polls are open in Canada on Monday where a snap election is being held to determine who will become the country's next prime minister. It comes just six weeks after Mark Carney was sworn in as PM, replacing his party colleague Justin Trudeau who resigned amid dwindling support.

The two clear front runners are the Liberal Party- led by Carney - who have been in power for a decade, and the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre. Voting comes after a car was driven into a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver over the weekend, killing at least 11 people, including a five-year-old-girl.

When Canada's Parliament was dissolved last month following the election call, the Liberals held 152 seats, while the Conservatives had 120. The remaining seats were distributed among the Bloc Québécois (33), the New Democratic Party (24), and the Green Party (2).


Over seven million Canadians have already voted early, marking a record turnout. Polls will open on Monday at 7:00 a.m. EDT (12:00 p.m. BST).

When do we expect to know who won Canada elections?

Preliminary results will likely come in late on Monday night or early on Tuesday morning, local time, according to BBC. On election night, news organizations — including CBC, Canada's public broadcaster — typically project a winner once a majority of the votes have been counted. These projections are based on preliminary results provided by Elections Canada, the agency responsible for overseeing federal elections.

Poll closing times are staggered across the country to account for the different time zones.

Voting first concludes in Newfoundland and Labrador at 7:00 p.m. EDT (12:00 a.m. BST), while the final polls close in British Columbia at 10:00 p.m. EDT (3:00 a.m. BST). A significant number of polls, particularly in Ontario and Quebec, close at 9:30 p.m. EDT (2:30 a.m. BST). This period is expected to be pivotal, with major gains and losses anticipated for the political parties, the report said.

If the Conservatives or Liberals win big in the eastern part of the country, it is possible the election can be called earlier in the night. But more time could be needed to ascertain whether Canadians elect a minority or majority government.
