CONTRAIL AVOIDANCE
Aviation now needs a Tesla moment, like cars in the 2000s ¡ª decarbonising demands disruptive new tech: Robert Miller
Robert Miller, Director of the Whittle Laboratory, highlights the need for disruptive technologies like cryogenic hydrogen fuel and hybrid electric flight to achieve net-zero aviation by 2050. He emphasizes four Sustainable Aviation Goals: mitigating contrail-induced cloud formation, enhancing system efficiency, scaling up sustainable aviation fuels, and investing in experimental technologies like hydrogen-powered aircraft.
Decarbonising aviation is vital for climate action as a rising non-Western middle class starts to fly ¡ª COP28 has raised this ambition: Robert J. Miller
Aviation directly contributes 2% to 3% to total greenhouse gas emissions. But it also has non-CO2 effects ¡ª when a plane flies at a certain altitude, it sometimes leaves a persistent contrail, the cloudy line at its back. At times, this forms clouds and traps heat to Earth which can raise the effect to 6%. Now, in 2018, only 11% of the world flew. But a rising middle class across Asia, South America and Africa will be flying soon ¡ª that 2% or 6% sum will increase, Robert J. Miller is Chair in Aerothermal Technology at Cambridge University said.
New Farakka Express derailment: Preliminary enquiry indicates glitch in train's guiding system
The report of the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) released Tuesday suggested the reason behind the derailment was that it was given a green signal despite the point failure.
Altering flight routes may cut climate impact by 10 per cent: Study
Aviation is different from many other sectors, since its climate impact is largely caused by non-CO2 effects, such as contrails and ozone formation.
Here are some lesser-known facts about flying
Things you never knew about flying like why do airlines dim the cabin lights for take off and landing.
How US weaponry is turning Syrian conflict into proxy war
Several US-aided units have come under direct fire by the Russians. But they claim to have held their territory, with the help of TOW missiles.
