Ahead of Market: 10 things that will decide stock market action on Monday

The Indian market extended its losses on Friday, with all 13 major sectors closing in the red, as investors fretted about the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed reciprocal tariffs. Pharma stocks, heavily reliant on U.S. revenue, faced the sharpest declines.

The benchmark BSE Sensex lost 199.76 points or 0.26% to close at 75,939.21, while the broader Nifty 50 index closed at 22,929.25, lower by 102.15 points or 0.44%.

Here's how analysts read the market pulse:

The risk-averse sentiment continues to rule investors’ minds as corporate earnings are significantly lower than the market expectations during the start of the year, especially for mid- and small caps, said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

“Muted earnings trend, INR depreciation along with external factors like tariffs are expected to keep the sentiments weak in the near term, which could further push FIIs outflows. Volatility is expected to stay elevated until there is clarity on tariffs and a recovery in corporate earnings,” Nair added.

US markets

Wall Street ended mixed on Friday as Nvidia gained and Microsoft dipped, while Treasury yields fell after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariff plans without imposing new ones.

The S&P 500 inched down 0.01% to close at 6,114.63 points. The Nasdaq rose 0.41% to 20,026.77 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.37% to 44,546.08 points.

European Markets

Europe’s main stock index ended lower on Friday as investors took a breather after four consecutive sessions of gains. Meanwhile, luxury stocks climbed, driven by strong earnings from Birkin bag maker Hermès.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index slipped 0.3% after reaching record highs in the previous four sessions.

Tech View

The Nifty continues to reel under a bear attack, closing below 23,000 after spending a few days floating above this level, said Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, adding that the sentiment remains weak, even though the index managed to close 155 points off its low, as it continues to trade below a critical short-term moving average.

“A decisive fall from 22,800 could trigger further panic in the market. On the higher end, 23,100 appears to be the immediate resistance, above which the market may see some respite," De said.

Most active stocks in terms of turnover

HDFC Bank (Rs 1,687.06 crore), Godfrey Philips (Rs 1,684.72 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 1,300.69 crore), Reliance Industries (Rs 1,251.33 crore), BSE (Rs 1,235.52 crore), Deepak Nitrite (RS 1,144.47 crore) and Infosys (Rs 976.58 crore) were among the most active stocks on NSE in value terms. Higher activity in a counter in value terms can help identify the counters with highest trading turnovers in the day.

Most active stocks in volume terms

Vodafone Idea (Traded shares: 49.72 crore), YES Bank (Traded shares: 6.69 crore), Suzlon Energy (Traded shares: 4.59 crore), Tata Steel (Traded shares: 4.14 crore), Manappuram Finance (Traded shares: 3.95 crore), Zomato (Traded shares: 3.27 crore) and SAIL (Traded shares: 3.21 crore) were among the most actively traded stocks in volume terms on NSE.

Stocks showing buying interest

Shares of Godfrey Philips, Triveni Turbine, Chalet Hotels, Bayer Cropscience, Ajanta Pharma, Triveni Engineering and HBL Engineering were among the stocks that witnessed strong buying interest from market participants.

52 Week high

Over 47 stocks hit their 52 week highs today while 641 stocks slipped to their 52-week lows. Among the ones which hit their 52 week highs included SBI Cards and Payment Services and Redington.

Stocks seeing selling pressure

Stocks which witnessed significant selling pressure were Concord Biotech, Deepak Nitrite, Kalpataru Projects International, Jyoti CNC Automation, Natco Pharma, Laurus Labs and Swan Energy.

Sentiment meter bearish

The market sentiments were bearish. Out of the 4,083 stocks that traded on the BSE on Friday, 3,320 stocks witnessed declines, 681 saw advances, while 82 stocks remained unchanged.
