Mumbai, Sep 5 (IANS) Indian frontline equity indices closed in the red on Thursday due to heavyweights like Reliance, Tata Motors and Nestle losing the most in the Sensex.
Nifty opened flat and traded within a narrow range, ending the day with a negative close at 24,205, Hrishikesh Yedve, Asit C. Mehta Investment Interrmediates said, highlighting that it was the Nifty Smallcap 100 index that outperformed the benchmarks, gaining about 1.15%.

Gold consolidates after climbing record peak, eyes fourth straight monthly rise
Gold retreated on Thursday as prices consolidated after hitting a record high, but safe-haven demand prompted by a knife-edge U.S. presidential election kept the precious metal on track for its fourth straight monthly gain.
Spot gold was down 0.7% at $2,766.59 per ounce by 9:35 a.m. ET (1335 GMT), after hitting a record high of $2,790.15 earlier in the session. Prices have firmed around 5% for the month so far.
U.S. gold futures dipped 0.8% to $2,777.20.

Uber shares slide 8% as slowing bookings growth spooks investors
Uber Technologies signaled a further slowdown in its mainstay app-based taxi business as it forecast fourth-quarter gross bookings below Wall Street estimates, sending its shares down nearly 8%.

US stocks open lower after Meta, Microsoft cost warnings
Wall Street's main indexes opened lower on Thursday as warnings from Meta Platforms and Microsoft about rising AI costs sobered some of the buzz around megacap stocks, which have been the market's primary driver this year.

Tata Investment Q2 Results: Revenue jumps 15% YoY to Rs 142 cr, profit flat at Rs 124 crore
Tata Investment Corporation on Thursday reported its September quarter net profit at Rs 124 crore which was flat over the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. However, on a sequential basis, the profit after tax (PAT) fell by nearly 6% versus Rs 131 crore posted by the Tata Group NBFC in Q1FY25.
Total revenue from operations stood at Rs 142.48 crore, which was 15% higher over Rs 123.86 crore reported by the company in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. It was flat on a sequential basis as the company's April-June quarter revenue stood at Rs 142.46 crore.

Traders stick to bets on 25 bps Fed rate cuts in Nov, Dec
Traders of short-term interest-rate futures on Thursday stuck to bets the Federal Reserve will cut short-term U.S. borrowing costs by a quarter-of-a-percentage point next week, and likely again by that amount in December, after economic data suggested upward price pressures continue to ease.
Inflation by the Fed's targeted measure, the year-over-year increase in the personal consumption expenditures index, was 2.1% in September, down from an upwardly revised 2.3% in August, a Commerce Department report showed. The Fed aims at 2% inflation.

Mastercard Q3 Results: Profit rises 2% to $3.3 billion on resilient spending
Mastercard's third-quarter profit rose 2% as customers encouraged by economic stability ramped up their spending, the payments processor said on Thursday.
Although some payments companies have flagged a slowdown in spending, it remain elevated compared with last year after the Federal Reserve began reducing interest rates.
Profit was $3.3 billion, or $3.53 per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with $3.2 billion, or $3.39 per share, a year ago.

Veteran banker Uday Kotak has said India's growth cannot be dependent on a few companies or groups and pitched for a more broad-based approach where many entities grow. Kotak, the founder and non-executive director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, has said while the Indian economy presents a great picture from the "macro" perspective, companies are facing challenges when looked at from the "micro" side.

Oil prices stable after boost from US fuel demand
Oil prices stabilised on Thursday after rallying the previous day on stronger than expected U.S. fuel demand and reports that producer group OPEC+ could delay a planned output increase.
Traders are now awaiting the outcome of the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5 and whether ceasefires can be brokered in the Middle East.
The Brent and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) benchmarks made marginal gains, with Brent rising 7 cents to $72.62 a barrel by 1009 GMT while WTI crude firmed by 17 cents to $68.78.
Traders are now awaiting the outcome of the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5 and whether ceasefires can be brokered in the Middle East.

Rupee ends October near record low; cenbank quells volatility
The Indian rupee ended near an all-time low against the dollar on Thursday amid outflows from equities and anxiety over the outcome of the U.S. election, but the central bank's intervention kept the local currency in a narrow range through October.
The rupee closed at 84.0750 against the U.S. dollar, nearly unchanged from its close of 84.0775 on Wednesday. Indian currency market will remain closed on Friday for a public holiday.
The currency briefly hit a record low of 84.0950 in Friday's session. In October, the rupee fell 0.3% and moved in a range of 83.79 to 84.0950.
The rupee closed at 84.0750 against the U.S. dollar, nearly unchanged from its close of 84.0775 on Wednesday. Indian currency market will remain closed on Friday for a public holiday.
