Net settlement systems, like Bacs Payment Schemes Limited (formerly known as the Bankers' Automated Clearing Services) in the United Kingdom, are not the same as real-time gross settlement systems (BACS). All BACS transactions between institutions are collected during the day. At the end of each business day, the net amounts of the money that was traded are used to change the amounts in the active institutional accounts. 5
The RTGS system does not need to exchange cash in person. Often, a central bank will update the accounts of the banks that send and receive the money electronically. The amount in Bank A will go down by $1 million, while the amount in Bank B will go up by $1 million.
